Michael Duffy is currently a Doctoral Candidate at UMBC working in the MMCL, having completed both his research proposal and the Ph.D. qualifying exam. His research has focused on the mechanical characterization of materials across multiple length scales. His research topics have been in carbon nanostructure (CNS) coated glass and carbon fibers composites, and currently is in metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and/or Direct Metal Printing (DMP) technologies. He is characterizing the microstructures that are formed from the AM process using the Micro-Sample tensile geometry to capture the mechanical properties. Michael completed his Master’s degree and Ph.D. in 2011 and 2018 respectively in Mechanical Engineering- Solid Mechanics at UMBC.
